Biomass - A strategic resource
At the end of November, the European Commission presented a strategic framework for a competitive and sustainable bioeconomy. FerroSilva welcomes the new strategy and looks forward to seeing how it will develop and influence the EU's future competitiveness and growth.
It is satisfying that the Commission notes that Europe has the knowledge, industrial base and people to lead a global change towards a sustainable and competitive bioeconomy and points out that the bioeconomy represents a strategic opportunity for this century.
By reducing strategic dependence on fossil-based and imported raw materials, and by diversifying supply chains built on renewable and circular materials, the Commission points out that the bioeconomy will strengthen Europe's economic- and resource security in a more uncertain world.
The Commission considers the bioeconomy as a driver of green growth, competitiveness and resilience. The bioeconomy will ensure that Europe's biological resources, scientific excellence and industrial base are used to decarbonize our economy and replace fossil-based materials and products.
FerroSilva's business concept is fully in line with the Commission's strategy as we use biomass from local suppliers, such as residual products from the forest industry, to create a biogenic syngas that is used in our process to produce sponge iron (DRI) and other biogenic products. Our DRI helps, among others, the steel industry to decarbonize its operations and has the potential to create negative emissions in terms of the life cycle of the steel produced.
